BIO
Hello,
My name is Efren Herrera, I am an L.A. based photographer, and I'd like to share some of the more notable mile markers from my unlikely road to photography.
1962
Born in El Paso TX to a Mr & Mrs Herrera and raised across the border in Mexico in a beautiful town called Ciudad Juarez, in the state of Chihuahua.
Education
An early interest in Medicine and Pre-Med led somehow to Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Texas, El Paso. And ultimately to a formal education as a classically trained Sound and Recording Engineer in the State of California.
Josephine
All along I had a wonderful grandmother that loved photography and world travel, unfortunately I would inherit not only her love of photography but also her lack of talent, and soon began cutting off people's heads in my own pictures.
2002
After a dream trip to Paris and the south of France, twenty or so rolls of film, and not one decent shot in the bunch, I decide to enroll in a photography class at a local community college and investigate this frustrating lack of talent.
2003
Tried my hand at Landscape and Travel photography and often became very frustrated trying to get places at the perfect time of day in search for that elusive "golden time"
2004
I will never go digital!
2004 Cont.
Went all digital.
Workshops and help sessions with people like Craig Wolf, Don Gale, David Mecey and Robert Farber, introduced me to the wonderful world of strobe lighting and an ever-present "perfect" light, as well as a complete fascination with the female form and the ongoing hunt for the perfect shadow.
STATEMENT
A frustrated Digital Designer inspired by the artwork in Frank Miller's illustrated "Sin City" novels. After trying unsuccessfully to imitate his drawing style, I found that all the how-to books weren't helping, so as a shortcut I tried to find photographs that I could scan and "transform" in Photoshop, when those weren't available, I set out to take my own. Next thing you know 4 years have gone by and the desire to search for the perfect line, curve and shadow is stronger than ever
